Geospatial Toolkit

One of the most common requirements for data analytics is how to aggregate, analyse and visualise data into different geographical regions.

If you find yourself struggling to maintain custom lists of postcodes and region groupings, let us take the hard work out of analysing data with the help of our Geospatial Toolkit.

The toolkit helps you aggregate data based on source postcodes into a range of other geographical region types, including postcodes into the most appropriate statistical areas (SA), local government areas (LGA) and primary health networks (PHN).

What does this mean for your dashboards and reports? If you have a postcode column in your source data, the toolkit allows you to instantly add filters and group your data by any of the 14 pre-calculated region types, including SA (2-3-4), LGA, PHN, aged care planning regions, rurality and more.

To achieve this, the toolkit provides pre-calculated reference data tables that contains all Australian postcodes with their matching values for each of the pre-prepared 14 different geographical region types.

In addition, the toolkit provides three separate sets of pre-calculated reference data depending on the desired algorithm:

  • Majority within – majority of postcode area fits within the target geographical area
  • By centroid – the postcode’s centroid fits within the target geographical area
  • By intersection – a many-to-many mapping for each postcode with any intersections of the target area

The toolkit can be extended to handle custom region mapping, including lists of postcodes mapped to internally created operational or strategic regions.

The toolkit can also be expanded to handle mappings not based on postcode, such as mapping LGA to National Disability Insurance Scheme regions or modified to use population-weighted areas for more accurate population health analysis.
